If you are looking to start out in Macro photography, I would definitely suggest the Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 L Macro IS USM Lens to you. Canon had, up until the announcement of their image stabilization breakthrough in the form of a hybrid optical image stabilization system like in the EF 100mm f/2.8 L Macro IS USM, not included any kind of image stabilization in their range of macro lenses.
The hybrid image stabilization system still works in the traditional image stabilization realm of minimizing movement in the angle that the EF 100mm f/2.8 L Macro IS USM is pointed, but goes further to compensate for both vertical and horizontal movement which can be caused by handshake.
Now if you are focusing at longer distances, hand shake is slightly less of an issue. However, if you are focusing close to the Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 L Macro IS USM, as you would in macro photography; this becomes a very important technological improvement. In fact Canon claims that this is efficient to the tune of 2 f-stops at 1:1 magnification and 4 f-stops at standard focus distances. Obviously in real world situation it would be best to test these claims for yourself.
Canon had previously steered away from including image stabilization in its Macro Lenses, but with the refinements of the hybrid stabilization technology they included this IS in the latest incarnation of the 100mm Macro lens, the Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 L Macro IS USM. And it does make a big difference. Simply using this IS technology around the house, without flash, light and aperture as standard, the images come out much clearer than an equivalent non image stabilized lens could ever achieve.
The Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 L Macro IS USM joins Canon's impressive short-telephoto lineup. It does however come in at a higher price than its predecessor. The price increase however seems less important as this lens is a true L series lens. It is robust and well built, sealed for weather and feels comfortable when manually focusing. In fact the lens is primarily constructed from aluminum with a particularly tough plastic on the focusing ring.

The macro focusing of the EF 100mm f/2.8 L Macro IS USM is a stunning 1:1 magnification and is blisteringly sharp. And as much as I thought the hybrid stabilization would not play a huge role in my macro work, it does. The design of the lens has changed from the traditional layout of 12 elements in 8 groups to 15 elements in 12 groups. It also includes a single ultra-low dispersion glass element. The 1:1 maximum magnification is now achieved at a minimum focus distance of 0.3m.

What all of this means is that your images are crisp and clear and the lens allows for simple and accurate corrections. The EF 100mm f/2.8 L Macro IS USM is sharp even at f2.8 and improves it's clarity as you stop down most noticeably in the corners. This small amount of vignetting visible at f2.8 is hugely reduced even at f4. You are sure to be able to see the most exquisite details in your perfect little subjects.
When it comes to the bokeh achieved with the EF 100mm f/2.8 L Macro IS USM, there is some disappointment that there is a little fringing at f2.8. Having said that the fringing practically disappears at f4 and we found that the bokeh quality from there on is beautiful.
The Auto Focus uses the incredibly fast and virtually silent ultrasonic motor (USM). They have also built in a three step focus limiter – which means that your auto focus won't go hunting through its full range, a common problem when you are using auto focus in macro situations.
What Canon has created with this latest piece of equipment is a great lens which has the ability to multi-task. Not counting the pros and cons to this lens for the macro work, if you choose to step away from your tiny subjects for a minute with this lens, you'll see that the EF 100mm f/2.8 L Macro IS USM excels in other types of photography too.
So take the time to consider what to fill your camera bag with. If you already have your favorite zoom lens, your basic walk around piece why not consider adding a fairly multi functional tool to your equipment. One that also allows you to concentrate on the small things around you. You may not always have the opportunity to take action shots, or beautiful scenes, so why not take a look at what's lying on your kitchen table. Ever noticed the fine seeds in a strawberry. At least you have the perfect equipment to take those images, crisply and professionally with one additional piece of equipment.
I have personally always tried to go about getting those detailed macro shots on the cheap, with extenders and macro rings. However, after having had the chance to work with the EF 100mm f/2.8 L Macro IS USM,I can understand the importance of using the right piece of equipment for the task at hand. Having compared my previous attempts at macro photography against the quality and clarity this lens delivers, I doubt sincerely that I will go back to my old ways.
Being a semi frugal photographer, the fact that this lens performs so beautifully for other purposes also puts my mind at ease. I adore the color and clarity that it gives in my portraits and the beautiful depth of field makes the images truly pop. I do not want to walk around with a weighed down camera bag of one lens for one type of image. I would much rather invest in a piece that extends my ability, and includes a specialty. The EF 100mm f/2.8 L Macro IS USM is an investment, but it is one that will serve your craft, no matter what level you are at. I am making sure there is always a place in my bag, and in my heart for this little lens.
